I'm glad you're here!
This time of year often brings me anxiety as I confront my unfinished personal and business goals. I admit it—I might be an overachiever. However, I understand that if I don’t push myself and occasionally embrace discomfort, I risk becoming stagnant and losing relevance in the printing industry. Therefore, the goals I didn't achieve this year will carry over to my 2025 list. Hopefully, this won't become a repetitive cycle—like the old Pete and Repeat joke (seriously, look it up).
That said, I am incredibly proud and excited about one goal I pursued this year, which will come to fruition next year. I have been invited to speak to graphic arts and professional development students at two excellent universities in the first quarter of 2025. I am honored by this opportunity to introduce students to the many dynamic fields within our industry, promote engagement, and inspire excitement about their careers. Yes, I will follow up on this.
Yes, high schools are also on my list. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 61.4% of high school graduates were enrolled in colleges or universities in October 2023. This figure is similar to the 62% enrollment rate in October 2022 but lower than the 66.2% rate in October 2019.
Many printing companies offer student-paid apprenticeship work-based learning programs combining on-the-job training and classroom instruction [Thank You]. These programs prepare students for skilled careers and can be excellent options for high school graduates who find traditional education unappealing for various reasons.
Additionally, high school students can gain valuable experience by taking summer jobs and participating in seasonal projects within the printing industry. This hands-on experience enhances their learning and allows them to apply their skills in future employment opportunities—hopefully with your company, hint.
In Closing:
Why am I writing about this important topic? Thanks for asking! My decisive goal is to introduce students to why I have been in this wonderful industry for over thirty years. Printing is more exciting now than ever, so why shouldn’t we want to share it with others? Many of you, if not all, entered the printing field because someone shared it with you.
So, how did I become interested in the printing industry? Do you have any guesses? Yep, it was someone just like you who took the time to make that introduction. It hit all the right notes for me, and it still does!
Now, it's time for all of us to do the same!
