Readers of my paper on modernizing VDP kept asking about the reasons for choosing desktop publishing as a blueprint for Modern VDP. This article augments the paper on the desktop publishing connection. I decided to provide an intimate view into how things evolved, and especially how solutions for project-specific problems can emerge as having an industry-wide impact. #pdf #vdp #dtp Eastman Kodak Company XMPie, A CareAR Company Adobe Xerox

The high-speed, offset-quality color digital presses launched or introduced over the last 2-3 years, including those announced for Drupa 2024, define a new category—Top Quality at Top Speed. Regretfully, the leading software solutions for high-speed VDP can only deliver "OK" Quality at Top Speed, resulting in a quality gap between the software and hardware for high-speed VDP. In this article, I present the gap, provide observations about its source, and suggest variability models and methods for enabling the software to play in the Top Quality at Top Speed category. It is an opinion article, and I am confident there are other opinions. I will be happy to read your thoughts and feedback. #CCM #Transactional #Inkjet #XMPie #VDP #ModernVDP #PDF #Adobe #Canon #FujiFilm #HP #Kodak #KonicaMinolta #Kyocera #Landa #Ricoh #Xerox #drupa2024

Sharing NVIDIA's CEO letter to his Israeli employees (due to NVIDIA's acquisition of Mellanox). I was moved by Jensen's choice to take the moral high ground and be open and direct about supporting his employees. Big corporations, which have business everywhere in the world, are challenged with taking the moral high ground, which makes NVIDIA, with Jensen's leadership, a lighthouse corporation for moral leadership. He is not just "hugging" the team in Israel but outlines operational support across the team.

I recently published a 2nd edition of my paper on Modern VDP. In this post, I decided to provide more background and better explanations on how cross-media personalization and Modern VDP became connected. The paper and these posts reflect heavily on my experience at Scitex and then at XMPie, but I believe they deliver quite a few general-purpose insights and takeaways, hence my choice to publish. Thanks again to XMPie for helping in publishing and promoting this work. #vdp #cx #personalization #omnichannel #crossmedia #XMPie #modernvdp

Publishing a New Edition of my paper on Modernizing VDP With the help of my #XMPie colleagues (thank you guys 👏), I recently published the 2nd edition of my paper on modernizing VDP (the 1st edition was published about a year ago). One reason for this new edition was to help readers distinguish between the historical dimension of the paper – it describes vision, innovations, and developments that started in the late 1990s – and the novelty it brings by having these innovations organized under an umbrella that represents a new branch of VDP (which was never before identified as such). The other reason was to help less technical readers digest the whole paper and not be blocked or deterred by technology-heavy sections. You can read an introduction to the 2nd edition here: https://lnkd.in/eNs5R7C4 (the introduction provides a link for downloading the full paper). While on it, I will re-iterate my belief that it would be helpful – for brands and providers of communications services in print and digital media -- to understand the distinction between Modern VDP and Classical VDP (the practice tuned for serving Transactional or CCM applications). Such understanding would enable making the right decisions (a) for the business – including charting strategic directions – and (b) for CXM initiatives, especially around including print in the mix of envisioned touch points. Readers’ feedback on the original paper included requests for clarifying the linkage between Modern VDP and Cross-media personalization. Another feedback from readers was an ask for a deeper explanation of why desktop publishing was selected as a blueprint for developing Modern VDP. The paper discusses these issues in detail, but I plan two future posts to address these with better clarity. Finally, one cannot ignore AI these days, so please note that in the paper’s chapter “Where Do We Go From Here -- What’s Next,” I touched on AI. Given the light-speed advancement of the AI field, I would say that my observation that AI could help create successful journeys/experiences without explicitly programming the flow diagrams for the desired set of customer experiences is less futuristic these days. I will probably address this in another future post. #cxm #customerexperience #vdp #crossmedia #personalizedmarketing #digitalprinting #ModernVDP #desktoppublishing #digitalmedia #ai #personalization

Thank you XMPie, A CareAR Company for sharing this, and I am humbled by Xplor International honoring me with this award. I am especially moved by receiving this award because the work that my teams and I did throughout my career so far (at EFI, Scitex, and XMPie) was not at the core of Xplor's members' daily practice. It's a testament to the value the Xplor community sees in the broader vision of integrating print with digital and in practicing creatively engaging individualized communications (and customer experiences) alongside regulated structured business communications. #xplor22, #XMPie
Congratulations to our very own Jacob Aizikowitz who has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at Xplor International's #Xplor22! This award was presented for Jacob's work "in promoting highly personalized business communications, the digital print industry was able to transition from low-value transaction output to higher value and larger volumes of business communications. This transition to business communications accelerated the growth and recognition of digital print as an alternative to offset print." http://ow.ly/wHz550KJ3L3

I am a board member of ACCGC -- a not-for-profit organization with a mission to accredit academic programs for Graphic Communications. I am sharing an interesting article, the first in a planned series, that sheds current, modern era light on Graphic Communications. Everywhere we look these days, we see digital transformations, and the discipline of Graphic Communications is not an exception. The art is in keeping Print and Digital together...

I recently wrote a paper on a branch of Variable Data Printing (“VDP”), which is print’s jargon for personalization/mass-customization/mass-versioning. This branch, which I call Modern VDP, enabled unconstrained and creative variability and the online use of data and scripting, as dynamic websites do. It was a revolutionary break away from the original VDP practice, which focused only on supporting the structured, rigid variability needed for printing personalized business communications, such as Statements, Bills, or Forms. Unfortunately, there are still awareness and knowledge gaps relative to Modern VDP, which lead to businesses staying in the dark relative to the opportunities – for printers and for brands – to pivot, transform the business, and succeed in our digital age. I hope that the paper will help close these gaps and open new horizons for these businesses. In the video interview with Cary Sherburne, we discuss Modern VDP, its key capabilities, and its expected business impact on the printing industry and its clients – the brands. The page for the video includes a link to the full paper. In case you prefer a short introduction article, please refer to a recent article I published, which is a good motivating introduction to the paper. I am publishing an article that should serve as a short introduction to a recent extensive -- deep and broad -- paper I wrote on Modernizing VDP. The article below includes a link to a recent video interview I had with Cary Sherburne for WhatTheyThink, which references the extensive paper on Modernizing VDP. #xm #cxm #sxm #employeeexperience #crossmedia #XMPie #ModernVDP #vdp #XUG

10moJust to add a bit more historical context, I think a shout-out to PODi and the advent of PPML would be appropriate here as that basically enabled modern VDP capabilities on most DFE's from just about every manufacturer. In fact despite PDF/VT's emergence as the new VDP standard, we still find with our DesignMerge Pro variable data customers that there are certain jobs better-suited for PPML and continue to fully support both PDF/VT and PPML (as well as PostScript and VPS, of course).
