Quark to connect users with print providers
Sep 12, 2007 11:50 AM
At Graph Expo, Quark Inc. held a preview session to seek feedback on QuarkConnects, a program currently under development. Quark plans to link output providers that are members of its QuarkAlliance with QuarkXPress 7 users directly via an XTensions module.
Proposed features include price listings, the ability for users to create a “favorites” list of printers, and a job ordering interface. Paul Schmitt, Quark’s vice president of emerging technologies and strategic alliances, said there currently is no intention to include e-commerce capability (i.e., billing via QuarkConnects).
RIT professor emeritus Frank Romano shared his enthusiasm for the program. He noted, “I object to the prices being on there,” citing geography and output capabilities as important keys to differentiation between printers, as opposed to a commodity pricing structure.
Quark Alliance membership is required for participation in the QuarkConnects program. Quark is offering membership in two tiers: “Community Membership” is free and includes a listing in QuarkConnects; “Authorized Partner” enrollment costs $395 through October 31, 2007, (regularly $495) and includes a listing in QuarkConnects, free software and full functionality within the QuarkConnects program (currently under development).
