NPES, NAPIM announce revised safety standard for vertical post ink mixers

NPES (Reston, VA) and the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers (NAPIM) have announced an important revision to a safety standard affecting vertical post mixers.
B65/NAPIM 177.2-2006, Safety Standard - Printing Ink Vertical Post Mixers, was approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This standard revises and replaces B177.2-1997, and is currently available from NPES. The 2006 standard incorporates significant changes to the 1997 standard, including the addition of requirements relating to emergency stop.
"This thoroughly revised standard is designed to be a concise, detailed guide for developing safe work practices, training programs and equipment guards," says George Fuchs, NAPIM manager of environmental affairs and information systems. "NAPIM considers this to be a very important safety standard for the ink industry, not only because of the extensive usage of vertical post mixers within the ink industry, but because there is a continuing effort to make such equipment safer to operate."
David Currier, senior ESH specialist for Flint Group (a member of NPES and NAPIM), says, "The standard will play a major role in educating the small and midsize ink manufacturers that do not have full-time environmental, safety and health professionals on staff. The standard demonstrates the leadership and strength that comes from the partnership between ink manufacturers and equipment suppliers to help ensure that not only the equipment is designed and built with safety in mind, but also that safe operating procedures are identified. By providing consistency in the safety features of vertical post mixers, we provide an increased level of safety for our employees."
