Newsworld launches newspaper innovation
Aug 13, 2007 3:29 PM
Newsworld Corp. Ltd. (London) has developed a “distribute-then-print” model, designed to be a flexible and inexpensive way of publishing a newspaper in any selected market, with the quality, look and feel of the original brand product.
Multiple daily editions and personalized or localized versions for both advertising and editorial are other points of difference with the system.
The company has partnered Dainippon Screen, Epson and Hunkeler to develop bespoke adaptations to the latest technology that will enable remote digital printing on demand, in locations where the production of up to 5,000 copies proves more cost effective locally when compared to transport or agent handling costs.
The system incorporates the Truepress 520, Dainippon's reel-fed inkjet press, which has been modified to accommodate Epson dye-based inks and Hunkeler's newspaper finishing system. Newsworld has developed its own proprietary software for file transfer and management.
The Truepress 520 can print up to 600 copies of a tabloid or 400 copies of a broadsheet, full-color, 48-page newspaper per hour. The system can print both sides in full color on stock ranging from 50 to 150 gsm.
Newsworld founder Nils Trosterud says, "Around 10 million newspapers are exported each year, and for the first time, we are offering a viable and flexible alternative to the traditional production method. Efficiencies gained from the streamlined distribution and reduced time to market will give publishers the opportunity for same-day delivery, longer sales periods, availability in new locations, with risk-free expansion into new markets."
