E&M is first in U.S. to install Rilecart DP-4500

E&M Bindery & Finishing (Clifton, NJ) recently became the first U.S. company to install an inline, fully automatic punching and wire-o book-binding Rilecart DP-4500 line.

With 46 years of mechanical binding experience and seven other Wire-O machines on the floor, E&M general manager Russell Starling says this new addition has raised the bar a notch or two.

The flagship Rilecart DP-4500 divides collated book blocks as necessary, punches each stack, recollates the stacks along with the covers, and automatically transfers them to the binding station where the Wire-O elements fed from a spool are inserted and closed. The machine is capable of punching and binding up to 3,500 books per hour. It inserts and closes Wire-O up to 1 inch in diameter, and if the book block is no thicker than 5mm, the DP-4500 can punch and bind at top speed. Book blocks requiring splits can have portions prepunched, allowing the machine to maintain near-top running speed.

“This enables E&M to get the job back to our customer faster than before because we can typically reduce our workflow by one to two steps,” says Gary Markovits, president of E&M. “We now go straight from our diecutting or other finishing departments to collation knowing we only have one more process, because the DP-4500 can complete the job in one pass.”

It also can automatically punch and bind text with tabs and oversized covers at the head, foot, face or all three. “Before this machine, these types of jobs were a bear,” says Steve Schechtman, sales manager. “Before, we’d have to hand-position covers on open Wire-O loops, which greatly reduced production speed.”

Installed in mid-March 2008, the DP-4500 has already paid dividends for E&M, which recently turned around an 180,000-piece Wire-O book project with dual oversize pocket covers in fewer than 10 days. “Prior to the Rilecart installation, this is the type of job that would have tied up a lot of our production resources,” says Markovits.
