D&K (Elk Grove Village, IL) announced that the Xerox Finishing Lab (Rochester, NY) has validated its new thermal film, SuperStick, for use on the DocuColor 2060 and 2040. Additional printers are in the process of being tested.
The patent-pending SuperStick thermal film for digital, on-demand and other challenging substrates was introduced earlier this year.
SuperStick can be used for prints produced on Xerox, Canon and other toner-based devices. It laminates at temperatures between 260 and 290 degrees and reportedly requires minimal tension and pressure adjustments.
"The problem with laminating films is that you want it to be clear and stick," explained Karl Singer, D&K's president and CEO during a presentation at the company's open house this past January. "You can only put so much adhesive agent in film--pretty soon you'll end up with Scotch tape."
Other challenges include avoiding leaving residue on the film and, as anyone who has wrestled with a roll of SaranWrap knows, too much static. For some digital print applications, the laminate must stick to a surface with beads of fuser oil on it.
Using three balls as props, Singer explained the difference between a co-polymer film such as SuperStick versus a polyethelene film. The exec said that the atomic structure of polyethelene is smooth, like a stress ball. Co-polymer products "let you grow some hair" on the surface, said Singer, holding up a tennis ball. "These little sites that stick out help the film stick to a printed product." Finally, Singer held up a porcupine-like Koosh ball: "This was the dream."
SuperStick is available now in Nylon Lit and Nylon Standard. The line may be expanded with other products including a film for embossing, foil stamping and metallic ink applications. See www.dkgroup.com.
