MAN Roland (Westmont, IL) has installed its first DICOweb press, at a German printer. Nussbaum Medien (Media) (Weil der Stadt, Germany) publishes official gazettes and bulletins, the equivalent of community weeklies in North America. The company chose a coldset version of the DICOweb for this work but has reportedly tested a variety of inks and substrates on the machine, with an eye toward possibly running commercial print jobs in the future.
The plateless DICOweb uses laser imaging heads (developed by Creo, Vancouver, BC, in cooperation with MAN Roland) that adhere a thermoplastic media directly onto an image-carrying cylinder. The image is fixed by a 30-second heat treatment, resulting in a water-repellent surface that constitutes the printable image area. The image is automatically erased once the print job is completed.
