PRINT 13 is September 8-12, 2013 in Chicago. Are you in town a littler earlier? EFI, Xerox and OutputLinks Communications Group  are sponsoring the half-day EXECUTIVE OUTLOOK Conference on Saturday, Sept. 7.

In addition to some compelling economic and new technology presentations, this is also the venue where the MUST SEE ’EMS “Best of Category” and “Legacy” Awards will be revealed. Hal Hinderliter is mum on which vendors might have the inside track, but he did share some insights on what we can expect from the competition this year.

MIS AND DIGITAL PRINT TOPPED 2012 ENTRIES
Almost 50 of the 491 or so of the exhibitors at Graph Expo 2012 entered their products in the MUST SEE ’EMS competition. Prepress & Premedia accounted for 27% of the entries followed by MIS (27%); Digital Presses (18%); Wide Format Finishing and Analog Presses had the fewest submissions with 2% each respectively. “This is an industry-wide roadmap to the most compelling product introductions on the show floor,” says Hinderliter.

CUSTOMERS ARE TAKING MORE CONTROL
A clear trend emerged from last year’s winning solutions: Vendors are putting more control into customers’ hands via Internet interfaces. Just as self-checkout lanes at the grocery store give shoppers more do-it-themselves options, print customers can opt to do more of their own estimating, job planning and prepress tasks. “Print must be integrated into our clients’ workflows,” Hinderliter said. “It’s time to share control through collaborative processes.”

WELCOME PACKAGING AND CONVERTING PARTICIPANTS
Hinderliter is already hard at work on the 2013 MUST SEE ’EMS competition. There’s another new wrinkle in this year’s contest. Because PRINT is co-located with the Converting and Package Printing Expo (CPP), this year’s contest will feature top innovations from that sector, too. With the exception of the “Best of Category” and “Legacy” Awards, the winners will be announced during an August 6 webinar. Stay tuned!
