New digital presses on the block
At On Demand, May 16-18 in Philadelphia, Canon USA, Inc. (Lake Success, NY) showcased the company’s new digital color presses for the high-end digital graphic arts market. The imagePRESS C7000VP targets high-quality, high-volume professional printers, while the imagePRESS C1 is geared toward creatives and short-run commercial printers.
“The imagePRESS digital press technology represents one of the most anticipated breakthroughs in recent Canon history, and we look forward to product releases later this year,” said Tod Pike, senior vice president for Canon USA’s Imaging Systems Group.
Both models are scheduled to ship Q4 2006.
High-quality, high-volume
Canon’s imagePRESS C7000VP digital press, built on the new Canon imagePlatform, reportedly prints 70 ppm in color or black-and-white, maintaining rated speed regardless of media weight or coverage. According to Janet Cain, director and assistant GM, Production Systems Division, Imaging Systems Group, its rated monthly volume is 500,000 to 600,000 pages. At On Demand, she detailed three configurations for various paper capacity needs, using the standard 1,000-sheet paper trays and additional 4,000-sheet decks for a maximum 10,000-sheet capacity (based on 20-lb. bond, letter-size sheets). Finishing options will include two high-capacity stackers, and a plain or saddle finisher with optional trimmer.
Using Canon’s new 5.5-micron “V Toner”—small particle, oil-free pulverized toner—the digital press will print consistent color at up to 1,200 dpi. Advanced fusing technology allows for Gloss Optimization, a technology utilizing lower melting temperature to help match the gloss of the toner to the gloss (or matte characteristic) of the paper, for an offset print look and feel.
On the front end, Canon will offer a Canon controller or one of two imagePRESS servers codeveloped with EFI.
Proofing and short-run color
Canon designed the imagePRESS C1 model to address the proofing, short-run, and production color printing market. It also uses V Toner and applies Gloss Optimization.
The imagePRESS C1 is expected to print up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, 256 gradations, at speeds up to 14 ppm color; 60 ppm black-and-white (letter size). A new Advanced Image Transfer Belt provides media flexibility. The C1 will feed sheets sized up to 13 x 19 inches from all standard trays, and an optional paper deck designed for coated media can hold an additional 3,500 sheets.
imagePRESS C1 digital press users also will have a choice of one of three controller options.

Drying test is all thumbs
PIA/GATF (Pittsburgh) has developed the Thumb Twist Test Form for evaluating the drying performance of UV and hybrid ink systems. The form evaluates curing, image quality and gloss characteristics. It has been designed in three zones to help understand the curing capabilities of the press.
Simply print the test form on a sheetfed UV/hybrid press, pull a sheet, place your thumb on any number of squares varying in coverage, and twist. If ink or coating appears on your thumb, the sheet is not cured.

Ink mixing and dispensing
GFI Innovations’ (Gurnee, IL) Magnum automated formation dispenser mixes and dispenses spot color (PMS) paste inks at high speeds.
The key is Magnum’s Accurex disposable ink cartridge, which offers a dispensing accuracy of ±0.001 lb. and a dispensing speed of no more than eight minutes to produce a 10-lb. batch. Magnum’s automated turntable holds up to 18 Accurex cartridges, and each can be changed out in less than 10 seconds.
Because it has no whetted parts, the Magnum can be switched from conventional sheetfed to UV paste or back in about 10 minutes.

Color control
EPG (Centerbrook, CT) has added KeyColor T system to its KeyColor line of remote ink color control systems. KeyColor T provides user-friendly, computerized, touchscreen control of fountain ink keys for sheetfed or web applications. Press operators are able to adjust ink key settings rapidly from a central, streamlined ink desk to speed makeready and reduce waste.
When combined with AutoSet presetting software, KeyColor T enables digital data from an imagesetter or CTP system to preset all ink keys for even faster makeready. It also can interface with color-measuring devices to provide closed-loop color solutions for both web and sheetfed presses.

Ventilation system for curing operations
Nordson Corp.’s (Amherst, OH) industrial UV business has introduced the AirShield ventilation system for use with its CoolWave systems to maximize operating efficiency. AirShield captures the hot exhaust air from the lamp head and removes it from the cure zone, eliminating any possible contamination issues in curing applications. The system uses a quartz lens over the face of the lamp head for clean, dirt-free operation and venting of ozone away from operators, for safer operation. It is constructed of stainless steel and bolts easily to the face of the CoolWave lamp head.
