Web ordering/job submission and variable data
Printable Technologies (Booth 7139) will release two new modules and a new user interface for its PrintOne Customer Center. The PrintOne Customer Center branded Web portal lets print buyers conduct business and make purchases from their print service provider. Users can match the look and feel of the customer portal to any enterprise Intranet or Web site.

JobExpress, a driver-based PDF creation and job submission module, lets end-users create and submit ad hoc jobs from any application by selecting the application print function. After the user has reviewed and approved the PDF proof, the file is encrypted and submitted to the PrintOne server, and a job submission form is presented to the user for completion. The job is then priced automatically, and the user can approve the print job and proceed to check out.

Online List Purchase provides a seamless process for both consumer and business databases from list management companies such as HomeData, D&B, Equifax, Advo and Acxiom (through AccuData).

On the variable data side, Printable’s FusionPro 3.0 expands the functionality of DL Formatter. New features include:

  • Export of text and all common style attributes from QuarkXPress, including QuarkXPress 6.5. (Support for text and style export from InDesign is being developed.)
  •
  • Field definition "fill-in-the-blank" functionality for convenient personalization.
  • Improved print data stream output for PPML, VIPP and VDX.

Workflow dominates Xerox display
Visitors to Xerox’s bi-level Booth 1228, the second largest at PRINT, will get a bird’s-eye view of the company’s FreeFlow workflow offerings, with industry expert Harry Waldman as their tour guide. Five solution zones will show how offset and digital can work together, print-on-demand and Web-to-print, book publishing, personalized communication applications and promotional and transactional possibilities.

The PRINT show will build on Xerox’s OnDemand highlights which included the 70-ppm DocuColor 7000 Digital Press, Epic Cti-635 inline coater for the iGen3, Horizon ColorWorks 8000 bookletmaker for the DocuColor 7000 and 8000 and the Manual + Book Factory for the Nuvera.

The company also has expanded its remote services beyond the iGen3 to provide proactive monitoring and preventative maintenance support for Nuvera 100/120 digital copier/printers, Nuvera 100/120 digital production systems and the DocuTech 128/155/180 highlight color systems.

On the sales and marketing side, Xerox has announced the ProfitAccelelerator Vertical Market Kit, a set of tools and sample print applications designed to help commercial printers boost their business in 10 key industries, including healthcare, retail and banking.

Visitors to the Xerox booth also will see Output Manager, workflow software that helps users manage the flow of print jobs to the most appropriate networked printer.

In cooperation with Duplo, printed pieces coming off the Xerox iGen3 are sent to Duplo’s DocuCutter 645 where the JDF associated with the print job directs the device how to full-bleed trim and crease the document. Postcards and greeting cards can be creased and trimmed automatically.

Now that’s inkjet can-do
Crown Holdings and Jetrion (Booth 857) have produced a full-color, digital inkjet printed can. Jetrion’s proprietary flexible and formable color inkjet inks were used to produce ultra high-resolution images on a coated metal substrate that subsequently was formed by traditional manufacturing processes. Jetrion’s prototype, single-pass drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet system was used to produce the images on a coated metal substrate.

Inkjet ink portfolio
Jetrion’s portfolio of high-performance inkjet inks can be used for a range of packaging, addressing, coding, direct mail and wide-format applications. CIJ ink, makeup and wash products currently are available for addressing and coding applications for Scitex, Videojet, Domino and Imaje printing technologies. Jetrion also offers a comprehensive line of DOD inkjet inks and—for Xaar and Spectra DOD printing technologies—CMYK solvent inks for outdoor applications and UV inks for packaging, point-of-purchase, private label, textile and large format/signage.

Jetrion’s 3000 series of DOD inkjet printers offer a range of speeds, inks and print resolutions. Users can run multiple 3000 series printers via the same Windows-based controller and graphic interface.

Flint Ink Corp. created Jetrion in 2003. Jetrion specializes in high performance inkjet inks, printing systems and integration services for industrial printing markets.

Enhanced inkjet addressing
Videojet Technologies’ (Booth 2879) G4100 digital imaging system combines high print resolution and throughput with ease of use. Developed with HP thermal inkjet technology, the G4100 features a 4.25-inch print band in a single head that allows commercial printers to customize mail pieces with up to 1,200-dpi resolution for addresses, message text and graphics. At speeds up to 500 ft./min., high-resolution print jobs can be completed quickly, and the G4100’s self-wiping print heads reduce maintenance.

The system’s dual 775 mL ink cartridges dramatically reduce downtime. When one cartridge empties, the G4100 automatically switches to the other, so the empty cartridge can be changed while avoiding a temporary shutdown.

Nipson & Pitman tackle VDP
At OnDemand, Nipson America and Pitman Co. discussed the companies’ recently announced a distribution partnership. Nipson and Pitman are targeting commercial printers, converters and packaging operations that want to add digital capabilities to their existing flexo and narrow web offset presses. Applications for Nipson’s cold-flash fusion technology include labels, tags, books-on-demand and security documents.

"Our customers expect us to bring them new ideas," said Joe Demharter, president of Pitman. "They want to know how to get into variable-data printing." Larry D’Amico, Pitman’s vice president of direct imaging sales, added that Pitman’s 20 imaging specialists are ideally positioned to help customers identify potential variable-data applications and demonstrate solutions.

Noting that Pitman reaches between 30 to 40 percent of U.S. commercial printers, Robert Stabler, president of Nipson America, said the partnership will help Nipson expand its reach.

Nipson’s offerings include the 230 ft./min. VaryPress 200 which can produce more than 500 images per minute at 600 dpi, in two-up simplex mode. In addition to the conventional twin engine duplex configuration, Nipson also offers a single-engine duplex (SED) version that takes advantage of the printer’s wide paper path to print both sides of the web with a single print engine.

At PRINT, Nipson will be in Booth 12049; Pitman will be in Booth 7546. Circle 178 or visit freeproductinfo.net/ap
