Convert images from 2D to 3D
HumanEyes 3D (Mineola, NY) has created a software program for converting conventional, flat, 2D images into 3D without layering and tracing. The user marks a few areas of an image according to general placement (foreground, middleground, background). An algorithm calculates depth parameters of the entire image. This is designed to help with natural scenes that include content such as hair or plants, whose edges are difficult to trace.

Continuous forms VDP and verification
The Videk (Rochester, NY) Print Verification System (PVS) can read both sides of a two-up duplex statement. Multiple “regions of interest” are defined on both sides of each document. The PVS:
-
- Checks the readability of the bar code used for intelligent inserting options.
- Assures that the correct disclosure information is printed.
- Performs a print quality assessment.
- Confirms printing is synchronized correctly between the front and back of each page.
- Assures print registration is correct on both sides of the two-up document.

Capture realistic print effects on screen
PrintDevizor, developed by Stonecube (Bristol, England), simulates process and spot colors, metallics, fluorescents, blocks, gloss/matte varnishes, lamination, embossing and other special finishes through its real-time, interactive print visualization program. Multiple effects can be applied using design images generated in standard creative software. Each finish can be viewed with 360° rotation in a range of lighting envi-ronments. It is available for Mac and PC.

Spectrophotometer supported by halftone printer
GretagMacbeth’s (New Windsor, NY) Eye-One Pro spectrophotometer now is fully supported by Proof Director Pro version 3.x to calibrate and linearize the Fujifilm FinalProof GxT digital halftone printer. Eye-One Pro provides tools to implement a color managed CMYK workflow. The device measures emissive and reflective objects, spot colors and flash/ambient light. Users can calibrate and profile monitors, CMYK output devices, scanners and digital projectors.

Paper for HP Indigo
Mohawk Fine Papers (Cohoes, NY) introduces a new technology for HP Indigo printers. A proprietary process known as i-Tone—produced in collaboration with NALCO (Naperville, IL)—is applied to Mohawk Superfine and 50/10 papers. The paper shows high adhesion at 99.5 percent, with minimal flaking at one mm or less, and a strong blanket memory.

Automated desktop binding
GBC (Addison, IL) has introduced an automated binding solution for multi-user offices, print-for-pay shops and high-production binding environments. With the ProClick Pronto desktop system, users can produce up to 450 letter-sized documents per hour. A preloaded cassette eliminates the need to load elements one at a time. ProClick elements, available in three sizes and four colors, can be opened, allowing pages to be edited, added or deleted and then re-bound with the same element.
The ProClick Pronto is available in two models: the ProClick Pronto P2000 and the ProClick Pronto P3000. The P2000 is a high-productivity, bind-only unit engineered to complement GBC’s punches. The P3000 integrates an electric punch into the same machine for an all-in-one punch and automated bind solution.

Inkjet CTP technology
PlateWriter 4200, Glunz & Jensen’s (Ringsted, Denmark) inkjet computer-to-plate system, enables press-ready aluminum plates without chemical processing for small- and mid-format printers. It jets a LiquidDot solution onto a nonphotosensitive aluminum printing plate. The imaged plates then are fed through a plate-finishing unit that dries the plates and bonds the liquid dots to the plate surface. The plate-finishing unit has a built-in gumming station to protect the plates from damage before going to press. The technology reportedly reduces plate production costs by eliminating chemicals and processing equipment.

Try out coating for free
Craig Adhesives and Coatings (Newark, NJ) now offers a free trial program for its 1077M-3 coating product used by sheetfed offset printers running hybrid inks. This new trial program will allow printers to order a free five-gallon sample to compare with their current products.
The 1077M-3 coating, one in a series of high-performance coatings, reportedly produces higher gloss readings, less gloss back and consistent results, job after job, on a variety of presses. This UV coating currently is used in high-end packaging, including cosmetics, toothpaste, pharmaceutical, CD, DVD and golf ball packaging.

Magnet upgrade
The Magnet Upgrade to the automatic loading
system (M73 Strip Starter) for the Spartanics (Rolling Meadows, IL) M-500 Decorated Material Die Cutting System reportedly is the only automated feeding system for optically registered die cutters that is capable of handling magnetic materials.
The upgrade switches to non-magnetic material jobs without any system configuration changes. It will handle magnetic substrates in all thicknesses commonly used for printed magnet products (between 0.254 and 1.52 mm thick).
