Adobe Systems (San Jose, CA) has released Adobe Creative Suite 2. The Premium Edition integrates new full versions of Photoshop CS2, InDesign CS2, Illustrator CS2 and GoLive CS2 as well as Acrobat 7.0.
Creative Suite 2 includes the enhanced Version Cue CS2 and introduces Adobe Bridge, which provides a dashboard into projects and direct access to the new Adobe Stock Photos service. A Help Center links to Adobe Expert Support. Creative Suite 2 includes advanced mobile authoring capabilities, creating and making content readily available for the Web and handheld devices.

Updated QPS
Quark (Dallas) Publishing System (QPS) 3.5 includes customer-recommended updates and workflow tools. QPS 3.5 integrates seamlessly with and enhances QuarkXPress 6 software. Features include redlining capabilities for tracking edits, QuarkConnect for tracking and managing applications and files from a variety of applications, AppleScript support, improved notes and Quark License Administrator 3.5 support.

Printer/cutter
The VersaCAMM SP-300V from Roland DGA Corp. (Irvine, CA) is a faster, easier-to-use version of the company’s 30-inch VersaCAMM four-color Eco-SOL INK printer/cutter. The machine offers software and hardware upgrades to enhance operation for producing signs, banners, billboards, POP displays, labels, decals, vehicle and floor graphics, and heat transfers for apparel.
Features include VersaWorks RIP software; Eco-SOL INK; the ability to print on uncoated PVC media and coated substrates; UV-, scratch- and water-resistant outdoor graphics for up to three years; and performance capabilities as a printer, printer/cutter or standalone vinyl cutter.

Gloss and thickness in one instrument
Paul N. Gardner Co.’s (Pompano Beach, FL) micro-TRI-gloss II µ ( measures coating gloss and thickness from the same position, simultaneously displaying 20°, 60° and 85° readings for coatings from matte to high gloss. The dual magnetic/ non-magnetic sensor measures thickness on steel and alumnium with a memory of 999 readings with name input. Easy-link software is included for Excel documentation.

Color change solution
DataLase, the color change solution from Sherwood Technology (Cheshire, England), applies virtual labels, anti-counterfeiting solutions and codes at full production line speeds with very low-power laser light. An inert, inorganic additive forms a positive image when exposed to low-level energy emitted from an industrial CO2 marking laser. DataLase chemistry can be added to inks, coatings and processed plastics as well as packaging and printing materials such as paper, board, foil and metals.
DataLase chemistry is nontoxic and environmentally friendly, and it requires no mechanical contact.

Binding module
The PAL-14 Piks-A-Life binding module from Spiral Binding (Totowa, NJ) attaches to any Rhin-O-Tuff punch and picks an exact lift of paper with ±1 sheet accuracy, reportedly increasing operator productivity from 30 to 70 percent. The unit uses paper sizes from 5.5 x 5.5 inches to a 14-inch binding edge (including tabs) and can handle up to three reams of paper at a time. The Piks-A-Lift also provides for variable paper thicknesses and can be combined with an existing APES-14 attachment.

Banner welding system

Production management system
KBA’s (Wurzberg, Germany) Easytronic includes the Webtronic self-regulating web-tension system to assist press crews at startup, reportedly reducing waste and eliminating time-consuming web breaks. Two new functions, EasyGO and EasySTOP, allow the operator to set up, start and stop a print run at the touch of a button. Automatic startup includes pre-inking or deliberately overinking the inking rollers according to preset data. Easytronic can accomplish low makeready speeds of around 10,000 to 12,000 cylinder rph with the EasyGO function. The EasySTOP button initiates a controlled run-down from the maximum production speed to the optimum speed of approximately 20,000 cylinder rph for a run-out washing cycle.

Double-loop wire binder
The Rilecart TP-480 is a semi-automatic double-loop wire binder from Spiel Associates (Long Island City, NY) capable of producing finished books at a rate of 1,200 per hour. The operator hangs and passes the book through an electric eye, and the machine reportedly does the rest. The wire is automatically cut, crimped and delivered onto a conveyor.
The machine can bind books sized from 2 x 3 inches to 18 x 16 inches. Options include an automatic cover flipper with a step conveyor.

Upgraded workflow, RIP interface

Fluid couplings
Available in 12 sizes and five mounting arrangements, True Torque fluid couplings from Falk (Milwaukee) address power ranges up to 1,200 HP, speeds up to 1,800 rpm and shaft diameters up to seven inches. The couplings protect belt conveyers from damages caused by sudden or jarring starts. Lightweight, quick-start UV curing
UV III Systems (Bellingham, MA) introduces Sidekick, a high-powered, air-cooled, flood UV curing system designed for use in smaller applications or in enhancing production lines. Sidekick can be handheld and used alone or in multiples in a production system, with or without a robotic arm.
