Automatic folder/gluer
Brandtjen & Kluge’s (St. Croix Falls, WI) Omnifold reportedly handles sheets as wide at 30 inches and boasts right- or left-side sheet registration, a combination angled or vertical buckle fold unit, flipper gate and tab blast. The machine offers a six-ft. converting area between the feed section and the combination buckle fold unit, as well as segmented converting tables, encoder-based controls and simplified electronics. The Omnifold also is modular to allow expanded capabilities as needed.

Customer Web interface for MIS
Cyrious Software (Baton Rouge, LA) has unveiled a customer Web interface for the company’s flagship product, Cyrious Control management information system. The module, WebView, reportedly allows customers to check the status of orders online, approve estimates, review statements and request re-orders.

Chemistry-Free CTP in standard and high-productivity models
Presstek, Inc. (Hudson, NH) is offering four new configurations of its chemistry-free Dimension Excel computer-to-plate (CTP) systems. Currently shipping in North America, Dimension Excel CTP systems are now available in standard and high-productivity models. The Dimension225 Excel two-pg. platemaker features semi-automatic plate loading/unloading and produces up to 11 plates per hour; the Dimension425 Excel four-pg. platemaker has semi-automatic plate loading/unloading, produces up to 11 plates per hour and offers a larger image size than previous models. The two-pg.,17 plate/hr. Dimension250 Excel features automated loading with plate prestaging, which allows an upgrade path to full automation when the Dimension is equipped with an automated plate handling system (output conveyor/wash unit/stacker); and the Dimension450 Excel four-pg. platesetter is a high-productivity version of the Dimension250 Excel featuring a larger image size than previous models.

Desktop envelope addressing and barcoding
Rena Systems (Oaks, PA) has announced the 2005 model of its Envelope Imager II, a desktop inkjet address and barcode printer. The company reportedly has increased the material thickness maximum to 1⁄4 inch and speed to 33,000 postcards or 24,000 envelopes per hour. Additional features are said to include eight MB memory (up from four MB), durability and reliability, high performance at low cost, easy setup and eight print quality settings.

Multi-use blanket
Topaz Carat blankets from Phoenix North America (Fords, NJ) are said to feature a compressible intermediate layer and highly resistant surface layer to extend service life and improve printing results. According to Phoenix, the surface layer is swell-resistant and suitable for switching between UV and conventional inks. Special fabric treatment reportedly ensures low elongation.
The blankets are said to be ideal for high-speed pigmented inks and frequent paper format changes. They are suited to high-speed sheetfed offset, package and metal printing. Available in a four-ply thickness, each roll reportedly comes with a serial number and a detailed quality report.

Air purifiers
Modern Solutions introduces two air purifiers. "The One that Works" Printers Air Purifier has supplemental activated oxygen for additional pollution control up to 5,000 sq. ft. Activated oxygen reportedly cleans and disinfects the air by oxidizing chemical fumes including blanket wash, roller cleaners, ink and aqueous coatings.
"The Quiet One that Works" Printers Air Purifier is designed for small press rooms (up to 750 sq. ft.) and secondary applications such as offices, break rooms and CTP rooms (up to 1,000 sq. ft.) where reduced noise is needed.

Upgraded Adobe Acrobat software
Adobe (San Jose, CA) has announced version 7.0 of its Acrobat family of products, including Acrobat 7.0 Standard, Acrobat 7.0 Professional and the free Acrobat Reader 7.0. Customers can use Acrobat 7.0 and Adobe PDF to assemble documents from multiple sources, create intelligent forms and collaborate securely on projects inside and outside the firewall. An Acrobat 7.0 Professional feature reportedly allows document review initiators to let Adobe Reader 7.0 users participate in document reviews. Users may also turn on the mark-up tools to add comments, notes and highlights.
Acrobat 7.0 also supports the Universal 3D (U3D) format, allowing Acrobat 7.0 Professional users to place U3D objects—such as 3D graphic product designs—in Adobe PDF files, where anyone with Acrobat or Adobe Reader can view and interact with them.

Printable card film
SuperStick printable card film (SPC) is the D&K Group’s (Elk Grove Village, IL) latest addition to the SuperStick Adhesive Technology product line. SPC film is said to be ideal for printing variable data on cards. The film is reportedly compatible with most card printers, including Fargo, Data Card and Zebra. SuperStick is a hybrid of thermal and pressure-sensitive technologies that mechanically bonds with the substrate.

MBO America highlights Drupa and Graph Expo new products
MBO America recently joined Müller Martini and Colter & Peterson to host a three-day open house at MBO’s (Westampton, NJ) headquarters. The event brought Drupa and Graph Expo technologies and innovations to the East Coast.Visitors saw nearly 20 multiple-machine configurations from MBO and its partners: Bograma, Ehret, H&H, hhs America, Palamides, Theisen & Bonitz and Wohlenberg. Highlights included MBO’s new fully automated Perfection folder and Rapidset, an automatic electronic setup/support system for the entire folder.
Other equipment included:
- Ehret UW-52/520 unwinder and VC520 C sheeter with variable chip-out and the MBO B26-S Perfection eight-page unit producing two-up letter folds from the web at a rate of 80,000/hr (40,000/hr one-up) and paper banded by a Palamides BA-700 automatic delivery system.
- Another MBO Perfection folder B30-S/644 demonstrated how the Navigator operating system—with touch screen, Rapid Set, Data Manager and the new Palamides alpha 500 stacking delivery—automates makereadies.
- An MBO B26/4 with Herzog + Heymann 291-52 transport system with paper lift, pick-and-place tip-on unit, plough fold and hhs fugitive hot-melt system combined to create a mail piece with an inserted plastic coaster and glued closure.
- An MBO B21/ 44P folder, an H&H 382-52 and a VTB-46 vacuum transport belt were used with a Streamfeeder Converge 900 card-tipper and the hhs hotmelt and cold-glue systems to apply a credit card, glue an envelope and seal the mailing with fugitive hotmelt.
- A Bograma stitching and die cutting line produced four-up 28-page miniature (1-inch) round-shaped booklets, stitched and hole punched from an 11 x 31-inch printed sheet, in conjunction with a 10-plate H&H folder with pile feeder.
- A second Bograma line featured an MBO B21/6 and a Z-2 knife folding unit with hhs cold-glue system for spine gluing and a Bograma BS Multi-450S die-cutting/trimming unit to produce two 16-pg. pasted booklets with hole punching.
- The H&H 16-page spine gluing system "ILS" was used with the MBO B21/44x to create a 16-page pasted and three-side trimmed trimmed booklet.
- The intelligent electronics of the Theisen & Bonitz collator were demonstrated on the T&B sprint B310VP collator with SPS control and touch screen. A 36-pg. booklet with a cover was collated, then finished with the T&B 304 stitcher, folder and integrated three-knife trimmer.
- The new H&H 191-82 inkjetting table with heat resistant belts was shown for the first time and joined the Kodak 5240 inkjet printer system with Fannon dryer to create an inline addressed mailer. The system was fed and folded on an MBO B123/44 folder with an hhs in-plate gluing system.
- MBO’s DIGI-Finisher produced saddlestitched brochures consisting of sheets with variable data and a cover. The new MBO DIGI-Finisher opens new options for laser-printer post-processing. It can create saddlestitched brochures consisting of variable and/or fixed data, with or without covers. The DIGI-Finisher can operated inline or offline.
