SAPPI

Sappi Fine Paper North America has launched Lustro, Strobe and Opus text-weight paper upgrades. The papers are reportedly smoother, enabling improved print uniformity and image contrast. The enhancements are the result of a multi-million dollar rebuild on the No. 5 paper machine at Sappi's Muskegon, MI, mill, which has enabled a higher level of control, consistency and uniformity in the manufacture of paper on the machine, resulting in surface quality improvements. The Strobe, Lustro and Opus Gloss papers are available in 80-lb. and 100-lb. text weights, and Opus is also offered in a 70-lb. weight. All grades have matching covers and non-gloss options.

INK DISPENSER, UV-CURABLE INK

Flint Ink and Accel Graphic Systems introduce the Optimiser, an automated, cartridge-based ink-dispensing system with enhanced ink control, usage tracking and reporting capabilities. With Optimiser's custom ink-level selector, operators can choose high-, medium- or low-duct settings. An electronic ink sensor continuously scans ink levels in the fountain, and replenishes it where necessary to maintain a consistent level of ink. Its reported benefits include reduced wasted ink and uniform print density, color and coverage. The system is adaptable to most sheetfed presses for commercial and packaging applications.

Flint Ink also announces Matrix UV ink systems, based on proprietary resin chemistry that results in faster cure speeds, improved gray balance, and enhanced ink/water latitude for faster makereadies and easier runnability. The system, formulated for specific commercial printing and packaging applications, consists of inks in process, UV-coatable and Pantone colors. They include Matrix S for high-speed UV web printing; Matrix HQ for high-end sheetfed applications; and Matrix AD and Matrix L for synthetic and nonporous-substrate printing.

HYBRID INKS AND COATINGS, TINTING INKS

Sun Chemical's Hy-Bryte Max is a hybrid ink and coating system that uses a combination of UV curing and conventional offset materials to provide high-quality results on sheetfed and web presses. The inks and coatings are said to offer a high level of gloss and protection, without glossback or dulling associated with in-line systems. The ink system also reportedly improves lithographic performance, providing a wider water window and reduced gains, while allowing greater control on press.

Hy-Bryte Max includes a full line of blending colors and gold and silver metallic inks. The coatings are designed to maximize gloss, protect the printed surface and provide high performance on press when used with Hy-Bryte Max inks. The system requires no special rollers, blankets, conditioning or cleaners, and eliminates the use of spray powders.

Sun Chemical also introduces Aquatint, a line of tinting inks for custom coloring of white paper stocks used for tinted business forms, file folders, labels and envelopes. The tinting inks eliminate the need to maintain extensive colored paper inventories, extend ink shelflife and ensure fast and easy press cleanup.

FOUNTAIN-SOLUTION-FREE INK

Kustom Group's JWT inks incorporate the company's Just Water Technology (JWT), reportedly enabling them to print on any lithographic press, with any plate and plain tap water, and without the use of fountain-solution etch or alcohol substitute. As a result, there are faster start-ups, fewer adjustments on press, less paper picking and pilling, sharper printing, faster productivity and reduced volatile organic compounds and hazardous chemicals.

JWT inks are said to set faster on paper; with the elimination of solvents and alcohol substitutes, ink remains on the edge of solubility. The inks also feature a faster oxidative dry — problem colors like reflex blue and metallics dry faster, and applications such as plastic and foil printing and in-line coating become ideal.

UV CURING SYSTEM

Nordson UV Inc.'s QuadCure UV curing system provides high lamp output while generating substantially low heat to the substrate. The system incorporates several features to enhance heat management. Reflectors have a dichroic coating to reflect UV light, but no heat-generating infrared waves. QuadCure also air-cools the lamp and water-cools the housing, using less air than completely air-cooled systems, and consequently less energy. Since air and contaminants are not directed across the reflector's surface, it stays clean longer for higher overall UV output and less maintenance.

QuadCure has a four-reflector design that directs UV light around the lamp body, rather than reflecting it back into the lamp, which prevents the lamp from overheating.
