New CLC workflow options Canon U.S.A. (Lake Success, NY) and EFI (Foster City, CA) have unveiled three digital color platform technologies and software solutions to expand the range of graphics document and color workflow tools, services and options for Canon CLC users.

ColorPASS-Z7500/Z7100/Z6100 servers offer a range of productivity and color management features such as variable data printing (VDP), security, job imposition, enhanced job management, mixed media management, scanning, new driver features and a WYSIWYG server-based imposition application.

ColorPASS-Z7500 for CLC 5100 and 4000 is driven by dual Intel Xeon 3.2-GHz processors with 1.5GB of RAM and two 160GB hard drives. Features include Advanced Job Reorder, Process Next/Print Next, Rush Printing and Suspend on Mismatch. ColorPASS-Z7100 for CLC 5100 and 4000 runs on a Windows XPe platform, comes with a Pentium 4 3.06-GHz processor and has 512MB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. Users may operate advanced job logs, preview PDF files, scale images, and easily track, edit and merge unlimited jobs. The Enhanced Platform includes Mixed Media 1.3, allowing users to simplex and duplex sheets in the same document, pull stocks from different paper sources and output variable-data projects.

ColorPASS-Z6100 for CLC 4000 is an entry-level production solution with a Pentium 4 2.4-GHz processor, an 80GB hard drive and 256MB of RAM. Features include Mixed Media 1.3, Fiery Impose and ImageShift to provide control over front-to-back registration on duplex sheets.

Wide-format inkjet printer
HP (Palo Alto, CA) Designjet 30 wide-format printing systems create fade-resistant, photo-quality images with consistent colors for professional photos, prints and proofs. A six-ink writing system combines HP color layering technology, 2,400-dpi maximum resolution and a four-picoliter ink drop size for fine details, smooth tonal transition and gloss uniformity. The printers reportedly can handle up to 80-lb. stock as well as thick and rigid media up to 0.015 inch, and they feature closed-loop color calibration.

IPDS solutions and workflow program
Ricoh Printing Systems America (Simi Valley, CA) has added IPDS solutions to the DDP 70e and DDP 92 options. The LinkCom III from MPI Tech converts IBM SCS/DCA and IPDS data streams to PCL or PS for printing at 70 ppm and 92 ppm with DDP printers. Configurations offered: IPDS only; PCL and/or PS only; and IPDS and PCL/PS. Ricoh also announces DS Enhance, a workflow development software program.

CTP calibration systems
Beta Industries’ (Carlstadt, NJ) three-member Ultra Dottie II family is comprised of image-based CTP calibration systems with high-resolution optics and a graphical user interface. All are bundled with image/data download software for calibration, linearization and documentation. Halftone standard and management software match ISO requirements. The Advanced product measures from 10-micron stochastic to 60-line screens on all plates, proofs and press sheets; Basic is entry-level priced; and Ultimate combines the Advanced software with Plate Quality Software (PQS), a relational database that organizes customers, machines and images/data.

Enhanced SCF catalog
Ennis (Midlothian, TX) has released the latest version of the SCF (Software Compatible Forms) catalog, containing all information on both previous and current versions of the software. The catalog features forms compliant with Peachtree Accounting 2005, Complete Accounting 2005, First Accounting 2005 and Classic 13.0 (DOS), as well as previous software versions. Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains 7.5-8.0, QuickBooks and several others are included. Additionally, the latest versions of Peachtree and Quicken checks are OCR (ANSI 9.7, Check 21) compliant.

Solvent reclaiming systems
NexGen Enviro Systems (Lindenhurst, NY) has designed the RESOLV-R 2 model IST series of solvent reclaiming systems to recover as much as 99.9 percent of reusable solvent. They are available in 2.6-, 4-, 11- and 16-gallon capacities with two system options: for either normal location or for Class 1 Div. 1 Group D Explosion Proof code requirements. Either variation will provide four- to six-hour automated cycling turnaround controlled mechanically or by an on-board, eight-bit digital controller that handles system diagnostics and maintenance alerts.

A built-in forced air fan handles vapor cooling. Systems can be used with disposable nylon waste bags.

Adhesive system pattern control
Valco Cincinnati’s (Cincinnati) MCP-4 adhesive system pattern control offers four-channel outputs capable of multiple glue patters, four product sensor inputs and optional integral, automatic glue flow control.

MCP-4 can be used with Valco’s cold-glue or hot-melt adhesive dispensing valves, including high-speed non-contact, spot, fine-line and ribbon-pattern gluing. It is suited to applications such as envelope manufacturing, folding, and book and magazine production.

Straighten warped covers
The Straightener from On Demand Machinery (Elizabeth, NJ) removes the curl in warped covers or cover boards by running the material through a three-roller dewarping station. Hand-tightened adjustment knobs offer control over a maximum 30-inch cover width.

Rollem’s (Anaheim, CA) 30-inch Advantage scoring, perforating and slitting machine reportedly is designed to handle 23 x 29-inch press sheets. New features include an adjustable side guide that provides accuracy to a few thousandths of an inch, simple changeovers and a shingling conveyor delivery system. Advantage can run inline with existing eight-page folders, inkjets and gluing systems.

Anti-tracking cylinder
The ‘No-Mark’ SiliCLEAN Blanket from Prodeco (Kenmore, WA) offers an alternative to loose-net style systems for full-cylinder style anti-tracking. The semi-rigid blanket forms an anti-tracking cylinder on the press. Backed with a loop material, it is designed for easy installation onto standard ‘No-Mark’ Starwheels using special mounting devices.

Setup reportedly takes only a few minutes, and the anti-tracking blanket can be removed and put back on in seconds to clean the back cylinder. No makeready is needed to prevent tracking when using the ‘No-Mark’ full cylinder.

Job sumbission and e-commerce module add-on
Electronics for Imaging (Foster City, CA) announces a new feature for its PrintSmith MIS program. EFI PrintsmithSite, a job submission and e-commerce module, makes it easier for users to submit PDFs. Incorporating EFI’s PrintMessenger PDF-generating print drivers, it enables users to automatically create settings, correct PDF files from their own desktop applications and send the files directly to the print shop via the Internet.

Compress JPEGs by 30 percent
Allume Systems, the company that brought us the popular StuffIt compression package, reportedly has a program that can compress JPEGs by up to 30 percent. This isn’t raw image to JPEG compression; this is lossless compression applied to the JPEG file. Allume is proposing a new image format: StuffIt Image Format (SIF).

Direct machine interfaces
Nastech (Flower Mound, TX) specializes in direct machine interfaces for web and sheetfed presses. Its P-DAQ system consists of four primary modules (press, scheduling, press status and reporting) all operating together to provide real-time data. Its Bi-directional Data Synchronization Technology (BDST), ensures the local and remote databases are continuously synchronized.

P-DAQ monitors gross impressions, waste impressions, net count by signature, estimated time remaining, press performance, pallet production data, ink usage and paper consumption at the touch of a screen. It can reduce the time spent in reporting labor and pallet information to other systems.

Money magazine recently profiled Kate Bingaman, a 27-year-old assistant professor of graphic design. Bingaman currently is in hock for $20,000. (Good thing she chose a lucrative career!)   • The 32-inch MBO (Westampton, NJ) Perfection folder installed at Malloy, Inc. (Ann Arbor, MI) can reach production speeds of 12,000 to 14,000 sph. The new cone guide system allows the sheet to come instantly in contact with the guide, reportedly enabling quicker registration.

  • Bielomatik (Neuffen, Germany) will install the first Bookmaster 360 west of the Atlantic at Bridgeport National Bindery (Agawam, MA) in May 2005. BNB reportedly will produce hardcover books in run lengths down to a single book an average of two days faster than the current industry standard.

  • Blue Island Newspaper Printing (Harvey, IL) has a new PRIME Optimal NEWS curing system from Prime UV (Carol Stream, IL).
  • IPS Printers (San Diego, CA) has added a Kodak Polychrome Graphics (Norwalk, CT) DirectPress 5634 DI system.
  • Caractéra (Montreal) used Fujifilm’s (Hanover Park, IL) Co-Res Screening and ICC profiling software, plates and fountain solution to print "Canada’s Wild Lands," a book of the country’s landscapes.
  • CAM Printing & Copy Center (Maryland Heights, MO) has purchased a Duplo (Santa Ana, CA) System 2000 for collating and bookletmaking.

  • Studio One East (Chicago) has installed the Kodak Polychrome Graphics (KPG) (Norwalk, CT) Matchprint Virtual Proofing system.
  • Van Lanen Printing Co. (Green Bay) has added a six-color Roland 700 with inline coating from MAN Roland (Westmont, IL).
  • The iGen3 digital production press from Xerox (Rochester, NY) finds two new homes: Gcom≥Solutions (Aston, PA) and Jones Printing (Chattanooga, TN).
  • Blanchard Systems (New Orleans) has installed a DALiM (Kehl, Germany) MiSTRAL JDF-compliant, Web-based print production management system at Brown Printing Co. (Waseca, MN).
  • Muller Martini (Hauppauge, NY) has installed three saddlestitchers: a Bravo-T at JW Boardman (Balitmore, MD); a Valore at Wright’s Printing (Woodlands, TX); and a Presto at Contemporary Graphics (Pennsauken, NJ).
