Ricoh Company, Ltd. (Ricoh) has acquired PTI Marketing Technologies, a SaaS (software-as-a-service) marketing asset management and marketing solutions provider. According to Ricoh, “The multi-million dollar acquisition ensures that Ricoh and PTI will continue to develop new marketing collateral management tools that help enterprises and commercial printers improve control of their marketing assets and workflow.”
The PTI acquisition follows Ricoh’s investment in PTI in August 2012 and its 2013 strategic investment in MIS vendor Avanti Computer Systems Limited.
PTI will continue to operate under its current name, management team and structure, at its Solana Beach, Calif. headquarters and Chicago office. Coleman Kane remains onboard as President and CEO of PTI.
Existing Working Relationship
Ricoh took a minority ownership position in PTI in 2012. As we noted then, Ricoh and PTI have worked together for several years, during which Ricoh started offering PTI solution bundles with the Ricoh Pro C900 and incorporated these solutions into Ricoh’s Business Development Program and Professional Service and Solution offerings in the U.S. The 2012 move accelerated PTI’s global reach.
Although we are most familiar with PTI’s web-to-print work with commercial printers, it does have an enterprise presence. In 2012, it had about 70 enterprise customers in insurance, banking, food processing and other industries. Ricoh’s vertical markets include education, healthcare, insurance, government and legal.
Beyond PTI’s existing prowess in print portals and variable data print, it’s a great fit with Ricoh Production Print Solutions, the former InfoPrint subsidiary—high-speed inkjet and data experts go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Some Final Thoughts
If we go by history, PTI is in good hands. Ricoh’s strategic acquisitions include Lanier (2001), Hitachi Printing Systems Divison (2004) IBM’s Infoprint (2007) and Ikon (2008). PTI looks to be at the right place at the right time. Digital print is going strong and PTI has the tools and expertise to help users make the most of the technology.
