AMERICAN PRINTER announces inaugural Environmental Excellence Award winners

NEW YORK (August 19, 2008) – Penton Media's AMERICAN PRINTER ([R]) magazine, a leading source for business trends and technical innovations shaping the commercial printing industry, today announced the winners of its inaugural Environmental Excellence Awards program. The Environmental Excellence Awards recognize commercial printers who are leading the industry in environmentally conscious manufacturing.

“We are pleased by the enthusiastic response from the industry,” said Scott Bieda, group publisher. “We received many innovative entries across all categories of the competition.”

An independent panel of judges reviewed participants’ production composition, manufacturing process and facility, and personnel to determine the gold, silver and bronze winners. Participants also were invited to vie for “Best Environmentally Produced Product” honors.

The winners of AMERICAN PRINTER’S 2008 Environmental Excellence Awards:

25 Employees or Less

Gold: Ecoprint (Silver Springs, MD)

Silver: Martella Printing (Salinas, CA)

Bronze: Weisenbach Specialty Printing (Columbus, OH)

Certificates of Merit: Inkworks Press (Berkeley, CA); and Mercer Color (Coldwater, OH)

26 to 99 Employees

Gold: Alonzo Printing (Hayward, CA)

Silver: The Castle Press (Pasadena, CA)

Bronze: Metropolitan Fine Printers (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Certificates of Merit: Prestone Printing (Long Island City, NY); and Anstadt Printing (York, PA)

100 or More Employees

Gold: Serigraph (West Bend, WI)

Silver: EarthColor (Parsippany, NJ)

Bronze: John Roberts (Minneapolis)

Certificates of Merit: Pictorial Offset (Carlstadt, NJ); Suttle-Straus (Waunakee, WI)

Best Environmentally Produced Product

Gold awards were given in each of the three employee-size printer categories:

25 Employees or Less: Inkworks Press (Berkeley, CA) for “Visions of Peace & Justice, Over 30 Years of Political Posters from the Archives of Inkworks Press”

26 to 99 Employees: Cary Printing (Morrisville, NC) for Meredith College’s Colton Review

100 or More Employees (tie): Sandy Alexander (Clifton, NJ) for Estée Lauder’s "Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2007"; EarthColor (Parsippany, NJ) for American Express Co. "2007/2008 Corporate Citizenship Report"

Certificates of Merit: RR Donnelley Metro (Eden Prairie, MN) for Great River Energy’s "Environmental Performance Report"; Dome Printing (Sacramento, CA) for its “Field Guide to Design, Print and Mail”

The awards will be presented at a special ceremony to be held the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, during the Graph Expo show at McCormick Place in Chicago. Honorees also will be spotlighted in a special section in the September 2008 issue of AMERICAN PRINTER.

In addition, all printers attaining a defined level of environmental achievement will be profiled and included in a special directory, “Environmentally Conscious Printers,” published by AMERICAN PRINTER’s sister magazine, Print & Media Buyer([TM]). The directory will be distributed to more than 10,000 print buyers and specifiers across the country.

"Our goal is to heighten the awareness of environmentally sound practices in the commercial printing industry," said Bieda. “We're proud to salute the efforts of these progressive companies.”
