There are 23,000 full-time print buyers in the United States who purchase just over half of all print and packaging. Another 92,000 buyers are involved in varying degrees, but virtually everyone else in the nation buys print at some time — from imprinted holiday cards to posters seeking a lost pet.

Here is a collection of facts and figures that provides a fascinating overview of what's being printed, who's buying print and key purchasing trends. This article is the result of surveys done from 2004 to 2006 by the author and grad students in his online Trends class at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). More than 2,200 print and media buyers responded to mail, phone, and Internet questionnaires. Industry data was developed over the same period from other research.
