PrepressForum.com founder Samuel Hargis is known online as “Joe PostScript.” Hargis has been working in the industry since he was 13, when he made plates for his brother, a newspaper press operator. His prepress career has included high-level jobs at companies in Texas, Florida and Ohio.
Hargis currently serves as the prepress and digital print manager for a $30-million, 280-employee printing company in Columbus, OH, a post he has held for three years. “My day job comes first,” says Hargis. “I work on my software and manage the forum on nights and weekends.”
His software development skills evolved as a result of working with with programmers and developers as a prepress manager. “I'm very goal-oriented, and I was frustrated by the lack of control,” he recalls. “I started doing little pieces on my own, and it just grew from there.”
Others reportedly have offered to buy Hargis' intellectual property, but he has turned them down. “It's something I enjoy doing, not something I expect to make me rich,” he says. “It's kind of like my baby.”
