Digitally optimized and combined offerings
Xerox Graphic Xpressions paper is a complete offering of digitally
optimized white papers. Xerox (Rochester, NY) has taken its Digital
Color Xpressions 98 product, expanded its weight offering to
include 24-lb. bond, and combined it with other graphic
arts-focused papers. They contain recycled post-consumer waste and
support a full range of print applications.
Xerox Business Multipurpose 4200 and Xerox Premium Multipurpose
4024 have been combined. The brand now features one type of paper
in a 92 brightness, blue-white shade, and it has been renamed Xerox
Business 4200.

Chip charts
Incorporating the theme of “One Company, Two Brands,”
Fox River Paper Co. (Appleton, WI) has released its Fox River and
Gilbert chip charts. The layout and information content mirror each
other while showcasing unique finishes and color palettes found
within each individual brand.
The chip charts have a six- by nine-inch folded size and colors are
arranged by grade line. There is a quick reference guide by color
indicating available weights, finishes and recycled content, as

Upgraded magazine line
Sappi Fine Paper North America (Boston), a North American producer
of coated fine paper, has made significant upgrades to its Somerset
line. Touted as the first choice for magazines, fine commercial

High-brightness uncoated paper
UPM (Helsinki, Finland) has launched UPM Smart, a high-brightness,
uncoated groundwood paper. UPM Smart boasts good stiffness, bulk
and opacity, making it well suited to large formats and low basis
weights. It is a new option for magazines, catalogs and advertising
material. Basis weights range from 32.5 lbs. to 47.3 lbs., and the
paper is available for rotogravure and offset printing.

Writing papers
Mohawk Fine Papers (Cohoes, NY) has released Dear, a
Strathmore Writing System promotion designed by Chicago-based VSA
Partners. The 24-page book contains print samples for identity
applications, including engraving, embossing, letterpress and foil
stamping, as well as a listing of envelope styles. Dear uses
four-color process plus a variety of match colors and varnishes.
Strathmore papers featured in the book include Writing Cover
Bristol, Writing Text, Writing 25 percent Cotton (now part of the

Freesheet Hybrid, a high-bulk, high-brightness paper from Bowater,
Inc. (Calhoun, TX), contains a blend of mechanical and kraft pulp
and is lightly coated to minimize dot gain and maximize overall
printability. Because of the high bulking characteristics, strength
and surface, customers can move to a lower basis weight. It is
available in 40- and 50-lb. basis weights.

Sterling paper
NewPage Corp. (Dayton, OH) has created a six-part reference tool
titled “A Sterling Business.”
The Tools section includes a review of the Sterling Ultra
production line using four-color imaging with spot gloss varnish,
spot dull varnish. A no-varnish comparison uses a waterfall format,
to depict the same image printed on six different papers within the
Sterling Ultra line. The Applications portion showcases Sterling

Higher brightness paper
International Paper’s Coated and SC Papers business (Memphis,
TN) has introduced Influence Plus paper with a higher brightness
level and enhanced shade. The heavy weights boast 88 brightness,
while the lighter weights offer 86 brightness.
Influence Plus can take heavy ink coverage, which allows the use of
white space with minimal show-through, and accommodates special
coatings and printing techniques. The papers are available in
matte, soft gloss, gloss and rotogravure finishes.
