Westvaco's Fine Paper Division has added Cover Dull and Litho Dull, in 80- and 100-lb. weights, to the Sterling Ultra paper line. The papers feature a smooth, dull-coated surface that reportedly ensures finely detailed images, rich textures and excellent readability. Westvaco has released two demonstration kits, to enable users to evaluate different press techniques on the new papers. Each kit contains printed inserts with the same four-color process image that demonstrate different effects: gloss and dull varnishes and aqueous coating on process colors, match solids and white paper, and touch plates with special colors. Stocking sizes, M-weights, and approximate sheet count per carton and mini-skid information for each paper are also included.

International Paper introduces Multipurpose paper to its Hammermill family of products. Boasting a 90-brightness level, it is available in a 24-lb. basis weight in an 8.5 × 11-inch sheet size. It is compatible with laser printers, high-speed copiers, inkjet printers, plain-paper faxes and offset presses. It is suitable for applications such as office correspondence, announcements, flyers, copies and promotional literature. Hammermill Multipurpose paper can be purchased in a five-ream, 2,500-sheet carton and a standard 10-ream, 5,000-sheet carton.

Appleton Papers Specialty Products introduces Ascent to its Durables line of Avario coated specialty papers. It is made with DuPont Tyvek, a protective material that resists tearing, punctures and abrasion. Ascent features aqueous coating for a bright white print surface. It has high opacity, and is compatible with offset, screen and flexographic printing. Suitable for durable applications such as tags, maps, gameboards, book covers and technical manuals, Ascent is resistant to water and UV degradation. It is available in sheets and rolls, and 82- and 105-lb. basis weights.

Tango's coated covers are suitable for folding boxboard packaging applications, soft-cover books, corporate brochures, direct-mail pieces, point-of-purchase materials, annual reports and greeting cards. Available in coated one side (C 1S), coated two side (C 2S) and performance plus (C 11/2 S), the covers resist fold cracking, and reportedly offer consistent on-press performance and support maximum ink holdout. Tango also offers two covers customized specifically for Heidelberg and Xeikon presses. Tango Digital Plus is cut grain short to resist fold cracking on Heidelberg DI presses. Tango Digital Cover for Xeikon features minimal moisture variation, which provides uniform toner adhesion. It is said to prevent on-press defects and provide a smooth surface for a superior gloss finish.

Georgia-Pacific Corp. has added Solutions Super Smooth to the Solutions line of premium uncoated paper. It is said to offer an ultra smooth surface for outstanding ink holdout and crisp dot reproduction. It is available in basis weights ranging from Sub. 24-lb. writing to 100-lb. cover weights. Solutions Super Smooth digital sizes in 24-lb. writing and 70-lb. text are guaranteed to perform on laser and inkjet printers and on copiers, subject to manufacturers' restrictions. Its Carrara white boasts 96 brightness, and the entire line has a Sheffield smoothness of 60.

Mohawk Paper Mills highlights the expanded Mohawk Vellum line in its latest swatchbook. Additions include 94-brightness radiant white, which is available in a full range of basis weights, 100- and 130-lb. double-thick cover weights, and cut-size 80-lb. cover. The paper is suitable for four-color process, letterpress, foil stamping and embossing applications. The swatchbook features 200-lpi printing on radiant white, warm white, cool white and marigold. Also included are three match solids, foil stamping and blind embossing/debossing.

Arjobex has released a swatchbook that samples Polyart, a synthetic paper manufactured from polyethylene film. Polyart is reportedly stronger than paper, waterproof, and resistant to tearing, temperature variations, grease and most chemicals. It is FDA-approved for direct food contact, and is suitable for all printing and finishing techniques. Applications include tags, labels, maps, books subjected to frequent handling and outdoor conditions, games and toys, cards, tickets and charts. Polyart comes in seven basis weights, ranging from 51 lb. to 162 lb., and is available in sheets and rolls. The swatchbook demonstrates each stock. It also includes printing demonstrations, helpful hints, stocking information and an extensive list of applications.

The Royal Bond collection is suitable for letterhead and corporate identity packages.

Kan't Kopy from Blanks/USA is a patented safety paper line with two security features to prevent forgeries of original manuscripts, legal documents, direct mail, prescriptions, stock certificates and other applications. The first feature is a full-bleed pattern, available in red, blue and green. If a copy of the document is made, the word “VOID” is repeated across the entire page. The second feature is a simulated watermark pattern printed on the back.

Neenah Paper's latest Environment swatchbook highlights the recycled paper line's five new colors. Blue moon is a deep mid-tone blue, green tea is a cool modern green, and Irish crème is a warm neutral color that replaces ivory and TCF cream. PC 100 natural is composed of 100 percent post-consumer fiber, and PC 100 white is a 95-brightness, brilliant white paper with 100 percent post-consumer fiber. The swatchbook demonstrates four-color process, embossing, foil stamping and thermography on the writing, text and cover stocks.

Cougar Opaque is available in many text and cover weights, including business card/cover and digital. Cut sizes are laser-guaranteed in 50-, 60- and 70-lb. smooth text weights. Lynx Opaque, offered in smooth and vellum finishes, is an opaque sheet with exceptional brightness. Recycled Lynx Opaque contains 30 percent post-consumer fiber and reportedly offers the same quality attributes as its companion sheet.
Both Lynx Opaque and the recycled version are offered in a variety of text and cover weights. Cut sizes are laser-guaranteed in 50-, 60- and 70-lb. smooth text weights. Husky Offset and Recycled Husky Offset are a bright, snow-white shade, and are said to offer high versatility and trouble-free results. Recycled Husky Offset contains 30 percent post-consumer fiber. Both Husky Offset and Recycled Husky Offset are offered in smooth and vellum finishes, in a variety of sizes and text weights, as well as cut sizes.

Potlatch Corp. has launched 130-lb. McCoy Silk Cover, a new paper in its Potlatch McCoy product line. The new weight features the McCoy ultra-bright blue-white shade, and complements the existing 80-, 100- and 120-lb. Silk Covers. The paper has a brightness of 96, a target opacity of 99.5 and is available in six sheet sizes. Applications include pocket folders, table tents, consumer goods tags, and videocassette and CD boxes.

Satin Book from UPM-Kymmene is a lightweight, coated groundwood publication paper with satin finish for heatset web printing. Available in 45- and 50-lb. weights, it features an 82 percent brightness. It is suitable for books, direct mailings, catalogs and magazines.
Star, the company's double-coated paper for heatset web and rotogravure printing, is available in gloss and matte finish. It comes in basis weights ranging from 43 lb. to 67 lb. and features a brightness level of 88 percent to 90 percent. Applications include special-interest magazines, catalogs and advertisements.

Strathmore Papers has updated Elements, its premium writing, text and cover paper line, to include a 100-lb. text basis weight and ultimate white in all six patterns. The line reportedly boasts an exceptionally smooth surface, excellent ink holdout and opacity. A new Elements swatchbook features the grade's colors and patterns, and demonstrates the visual effects achievable with the paper. Strathmore has also commissioned a poster and an interactive, online counterpart that explore modern cultural elements. The soft colors in the poster reinforce the subtle feel of the paper on which the Elements poster is printed.

Shasta Paper Co. introduces Sequoia C2S papers. The line features a blue-white shade and high brightness (86 gloss, 87 matte) that reportedly offer faithful color reproductions. The smooth surface is said to ensure good ink holdout for uniform halftone dots and clean solids. The papers are available in weights of 60-lb. to 100-lb. book, and 80-lb. cover in gloss and matte. They are manufactured with 10 percent post-consumer content and are available on request for web applications.

The sheets come in folio sizes for full-bleed applications. The cover weights are reportedly the heaviest in the industry and feature Crane's “kid” finish.
